Yes, the shopping festival was taking place across all online platforms, with a focus on Flipkart and Amazon. As a result, I decided to hold a brand poll titled, Which Do You Prefer: Amazon #GreatIndianFestival or Flipkart #BigBillionDays?
According to the brand poll, 51.4% of respondents chose Amazon’s #GreatIndianFestival, while 48.6% chose Flipkart’s #BigBillionDays.
Amazon is an e-commerce platform founded by Jeff Bezos in 1994, in Seattle, Washington. It started as an online bookstore and is currently the largest internet company based on revenue globally and the most valuable public brand in the world. Among the products offered are electronics, video games, apparel, food, furniture, toys, software, jewellery and almost everything you can think of.
Flipkart is an e-commerce company founded in 2007 by Binny Bansal and Sachin Bansal. It is based in India and was initially a fully book sales focus company. It later expanded into offering other products such as electronics, lifestyle and fashion products. In August 2018, U.S.-based retail chain Walmart acquired a 77% controlling stake in Flipkart for US$16 billion, valuing Flipkart at around $20 billion.
Amazon’s Great Indian Festival 2021 and Flipkart’s Big Billion Days sales both offered great deals and discounts on a wide range of items, including smartphones, household goods, clothing, and so on. And the great Indian festival, I mean Diwali, is already approaching.
People used to shop for festivals in different ways before the advent of online platforms. There was a time when Diwali shopping was an event that people looked forward to. Going to crowded markets to buy new clothes and other items for festivals was a mandatory ritual for everyone. And people used to enjoy the overall experience of entering crowded markets and waiting for their turns.
Amazon’s Great Indian Festival advertisements didn’t feature any public figure or superstars. In contrast, Flipkart Big Billion Sale was announced by India’s most trending personal brands like Amitabh Bachchan, Alia Bhatt, Virat Kohli and Ranbir Kapoor.
I closely observed the price of the iPhone; on Amazon, Apple iPhone 11 was for approx for INR 39K and didn’t offer any discounts on the iPhone 12. On the other hand, the iPhone 12 was listed for INR 50K on Flipkart.
Without a doubt, online marketplaces have made shopping a breeze. However, the charm that was present in traditional shopping has completely vanished. The feeling of touching an item before purchasing it, pondering whether we should buy it or not, has all but vanished.
We now have the convenience of shopping from home, but the experience and fun of shopping have simply disappeared!
